38 Men Tested

Postby jbbullock on Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:30 pm

38 Bullock/Bulloch men have now received results of their Y-chromosome DNA tests. The tests have been done by five different organizations: four commercial firms and one research group

I maintain a database for all of the Bulloc(h/k)s whose results I have and advise them where they have relationships with the others who have been tested. It's still up to the individuals to do their paper trails to determine how they are related. There are nine men who have been shown to be descended from Richard Bullock of Rehoboth, MA, and five who are from Richard Bullock of Surrey Co., VA. There are four other groups of six, four, four, and two men who are related but who haven't found their common ancestors. Eight men don't have matches with any other Bullock who has been tested. In a few cases we know that there were "non paternity events", i.e. there were either adoptions or extra-marital affairs.

I have been a little surprised that there are so many Bullock families who are not related to each other--at least not within a genealogically meaningful time period; however when you look at early English church records, you will find that there were Bullocks in every part of the country by 1500. That's only a century or so from the time that surnames began to be used over there.

Another of our goals is to determine where the American Bullocks came from. So far only one of the groups of four men appears to be descended from a man in Shropshire, England. The rest of us still need some Bullocks in England to get tested.

Since our mail lists and message boards are not to be used for commercial purposes, I won't mention anything about the testing firms or prices. Those who want more information should write to me at j.b.bullock@comcast.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false. Keep in mind that only men can take the test since it is done on the y-chromosome. There is no health related information contained in the Y-chromosome nor is any other personal information found there other than which paternal line the man may be descended from. Jim Bullock
